Canadian Firefighters Memorial, May 26, 2013

The folklore has it that plants should not be put in prior to May 24th because until that day there is danger of frost. There has been growth in most places on the site but in most cases the growth looks hesitant. One plot looks as though the plants did not survive the winter. Other plots looks sporadic. Still others seem to be doing very well. I found a wild critter on the site and that tells me that it will become a viable ecosystem.

The plants in the near triangle appear to have not survived the winter. The only green in evidence there was from weeds and some trees that have germinated there.

These woody bushes and many other such plants on the site are putting out new growth and leaves near the base. Hopefully this will happen further up the plant as the weather gets warmer.

The leaves on these trees seem to be coming along quite nicely.

There's the critter. Look to the right of the pipe at the top left corner of the rocks. You'll see a marmot poking its head out and watching me intently.

This picture is my attempt at being artsy but you can see the maple trees on the hill are doing quite well.

The plants on this southern slope are in a hit and miss situation. Some of the plants are putting out leaves. Some seem to either be still dormant or dead.

This shows one of the oak trees along the north side of the memorial. These trees are putting out leaves but they are coming out close to the trunk. Whether or not they'll fill out at the branches' extremities remains to be seen.
